Throughout the rituals, we skillfully documented candid shots of the family members, utilizing Canon cameras and the latest RF lenses to ensure exceptional quality for their cherished memories.
Unraveling the Significance of Kanyadaanam:
Among the most emotional moments in a woman’s life is the kanyadaanam ritual during a wedding ceremony. Stemming from the Sanskrit term meaning “giving away the daughter,” kanyadaanam symbolizes the bride’s parents entrusting their daughter to the groom. This age-old tradition serves as the parents’ consent in accepting the groom as their son-in-law and a request for the groom to cherish and care for their daughter as his wife. Though various communities have their own unique customs, the essence and sentiments behind kanyadaanam remain constant.
Mangalya Dharanam: A Sacred Bond:
In Sri Lankan Wedding Rituals following the kanyadaanam, the Mangalya Dharanam ritual takes place. The groom’s parents present the bride with a traditional Tamil Sri Lankan wedding saree, symbolizing her acceptance into their family. This saree, known as the “Koora pudavai,” meaning the main wedding costume for the bride for her big day, Becomes a lifelong attire for the bride during religious ceremonies. During the Mangalya Dharanam, the groom ties a sacred thread, known as the mangalyam or thali, around the bride’s neck. This blessed thread, (here it was made with the gold) applied some turmeric on it, carries deep meaning and is secured with three knots—the first two tied by the groom and the final one by the groom’s sister.
Understanding the Symbolism:
“Mangalyam thanthuna anena” echoes the sacred essence of the mangalyam or thali. The groom’s tying of the knot signifies the mangal sutra, an essential thread representing his commitment to the bride’s long and prosperous life.
